Aring Runs San Pedro's Longest Surviving Taho Business
Rosario Martinez, 76, better known as “Aring” to her family and friends, has been running the Jam Taho in San Pedro, Laguna for 24 years now.
Among the four existing taho businesses in the town, hers is the longest running and so far the largest distributor of the healthy morning starter.
The soybean curd, or popularly known in the country as taho, has been an icon of the Filipino delicacy.
The “magtataho” (vendor) carries on his shoulders a wooden plank where two aluminum containers hang on both sides.
Jam Taho started in May of 1983, after the family’s cockpit business closed down. To raise her eight kids and send them to college all at the same time, Aring decided to engage in this business to earn more from being a grade school teacher.
“I really did not have any idea in that kind of business [taho] at first,” Aring shares. But it was her nephew Carlito, who had previously worked in another taho business, that convinced her to give it a shot.
