Open Letter to Technorati

Business-Opportunities.biz is #10 in Technorati

Dear Technorati,

First off, thank you for running a valuable service that everyone loves and enjoys. I have to say that logging into the Wordpress dashboard wouldn’t hold quite the thrill it does without the Technorati search results.

But, all is not roses.

My weblog is currently ranked #10 out of all the blogs ranked by Technorati and has been in the top 50 for at least a year and a half, but it has NEVER shown up on the Top 100 page. I understand that my high rank has much to do with a little thing called How Much is Your Blog Worth?, but that shouldn’t exclude my site from the list. Your Top 100 page describes itself as “The biggest blogs in the blogosphere, as measured by unique links in the last six months”, and that sounds like my site.

Can you fix this, please?

Update 8/17/2007

Technorati responded:

Technorati’s Top 100 list is calculated differently than the blogs viewable in our standard search results.

To be fair, Technorati adds editorial control to the top 100 list and chooses not to include sites with large amounts of default sidebar and template links due to a tool.

We may present different views of link data in the future, such as unique post-to-post linking behavior, but I’m afraid that after looking at the blogs linking to you, your blog is currently not eligible for the Technorati Top 100.

We apologize for any inconvenience. Please do note hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions. Thanks for using Technorati!

Well, now we know. Thanks for everyone’s help.

  • Have you asked Technorati about this issue directly?

It shouldn’t matter HOW you achieved popularity, just your unique links, um, like me.

Perhaps I should take down the How Much is Your Blog Worth thing so I won’t be associated w/ the likes of you and whatever it is you’re doing to be kept off the top 100 page.

  • It’s not like you make the blog worth thing yesterday. Its been up since 2005, right?

  • Omar, yes I’ve contacted them directly, but have received no response. And, you’re right — it shouldn’t matter.

Especially, since as Hansen pointed out, its been up since October of ‘05!

  • Omar, I don’t think you fully understand what’s going on here.

  • Don’t worry, your blog has featured in the next web phenomena which is still under beta testing[not gleaned by a human, but by an algorithm].And I am not joking. You will soon know about it in the first week of next month when it is released. And, I am sure you must have guessed by now, I am one of the people who made this algorithm, a mathematician to be precise.

  • Luiz, thanks for your condescending remark. In the future, I suggest you include whatever information you think would clarify the situation. Otherwise, your comment rings rather hollow.

If you were to run a self diagnostic, I’m quite sure you’ll find that your sarcasm meter is malfunctioning.

I think all know what’s going on here. Technorati needs to clarify the criterion for the Popular Blogs page. Under the current explanation, “unique links in the last six months” this blog should be on that page. I understand the editorial decisions that exclude this blog, but that doesn’t exempt Technorati from criticism.

That being said, Technorati is still a wonderful resource.
