After moving to California in 1978, Lawrence Chang owned and operated a jewelry store. A year ago, he launched Fitmax Inc., marketing a variety of fitness-related products used in fitness centers and in homes.

Last month the 62-year-old Newbury Park resident started marketing a product he has been developing over the past four years. It’s a very small and portable swimming pool called an iPool (Infinite Pool), specifically designed for persons who want to exercise in water, a particularly effective way to reduce stress and strengthen the cardiovascular system, Chang said.

The pool measures 9.5 feet long by 6.5 feet wide. It’s portable and can be used in a home’s back yard, garage, or any available space. It’s priced at $1,199 plus $200 shipping and handling fee. He has already sold 30 iPools since June 20, he reported, mostly through his Web site.

Traditional pools cost more than $25,000 installed, and require large backyards. They usually contain harsh chemicals and hold risks for children. My iPool is a safe, low-cost alternative for people seeking the low-impact, high-energy exercise that swimming provides.
