After hearing Joan Williams, author of Unbending Gender: Why Family and Work Conflict and What to Do About It, speak at a Harvard Divinity Club conference, owner Jim Johnson seized an opportunity for Johnson Storage and Moving Co. to set themselves apart from their competitors and invest in the future of their employees. Today, more than 30 percent of their workforce utilizes the family-friendly flex-time program.
Johnson Storage & Moving Co. employees manage their time and responsibilities within a 24-hour workday, which allows them to be caregivers to their families as well as successful professionals. The Johnson corporate model emphasizes the importance of the American family.
“As my family grew, I assumed I would become a part-time employee, because I could not raise my children and work an eight-hour day,” said Tina Heaney, longtime associate at Johnson Storage & Moving Co. “Today, though, I am a full-time employee with full benefits as a result of the flexible work program. I can work for eight hours within any of the 24 hours that make up a day, and working at home also saves me money on gas!”
