Purse Making Mompreneur

NBC4.com:

“My oldest is 11. The next one is 7, 6, 4 and then I have a 10-month-old,” said mother Trish Alexander.

Alexander is the mother of five sons. In fact, she said, there’s little evidence that a female even lives at her Vienna, Va., home.

“I’m in a house full of boys and sports and dinosaurs and cars,” she said.

But there is one room in the house that Alexander said she created when she realized her life was void of feminine things. She began designing purses for friends, and it wasn’t long until orders began piling up, she said. Now customers from all over the world are calling her.

Alexander said that no matter how many handbags are on the drawing board, the fabrics and handles stay tucked away until the sun goes down and the kids are asleep. She said that’s when the mother takes a break and her entrepreneurial side kicks into high gear.

“It’s not unordinary for me to be up until 1 or 2 in the morning. It’s the only time I can get anything done, really,” Alexander said.

However, Alexander said the late hours are worth it because she sets her own schedule, doesn’t endure a long commute, and has plenty of family time.

“I don’t miss their first steps. I don’t miss their first tooth falling out. I go to their practices, their music recitals,” she said.
