Skype’s co-founders have – almost – left the building!
Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, the co-founders of VoIP service Skype have resigned, and there are signs that all is not well at eBay which paid a mind-numbing pile of cash for Skype. The inventive paid are also the brains behind web-based download service Joost. Zennstrom doesn’t wholly leave the business he created, but will hand over the CEO reins while taking on the non-exec chairman’s role.
A report October 3 from Ovum suggests that growth at Skype is slowing in terms of overall revenue growth, and total customer growth measured by registered users is also slowing, with Skype’s actual daily usage also weakening.
