Passion For Words And Art
16-year-old Karen Mok has always had a passion for words and art. As a child she says that whenever she would go to the grocery store, she would head for the greeting card section and read all the cards.
In 2006, Mok decided to pursue the business track and took the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship course during her sophomore year at Fort Dorchester High School.
She came up with the idea for Illuminati, her personal greeting card company based on her belief that one simple card can communicate a powerful message. She uses computer-generated poetry and creates artwork by hand for the 24 different card templates she sells. Mok donates profits to environmental causes.
She says the most challenging part of creating her business plan was understanding the economics—pricing products correctly to make a profit.
