Halloween Sales Get Bigger Each Year

Savannah Morning News:

Although many think of Christmas when the term “holiday shopping” comes to mind, the National Retail Federation projects that total Halloween spending will reach $5.07 billion this year.

The average American consumer is expected to spend $23.33 on Halloween costumes, including outfits for adults, children and pets.

But the tale of the average buyer’s register tape includes an additional $19.84 on candy, $17.73 on decorations and $3.92 on greeting cards, according to a National Retail Federation survey.

The total, $64.82, represents more plunked down per buyer than the $59.06 last year.

“Halloween is often a time for consumers to set aside their real concerns to focus on the imaginary,” said Phil Rist of BIGresearch, which conducted the annual NRF poll in September. “As news about the economy floods the airwaves, many Americans want to take a break from reality to have a bit of fun.”

Halloween comes at a traditionally slower period for retailers. “The increased interest in celebrating and decorating for Halloween has allowed retailers to cash in on a normally dead time of year,” Andy LaViola, owner of two Spirit Halloween Superstores said.

“It’s in between back-to-school and Christmas and the perfect opportunity to offer something fun and different to the consumer.”
