Two Moms Redefine Security Blanket

RGJ.com:

A solution is on the way for babies who have unsafe and temperamental sleeping habits.

Two Washoe Valley residents have spent the past few years developing the Guardian Sleeper for infants who get too warm or too cold at night or have habits of rolling onto their stomachs or kicking bedding over their heads.

The Guardian Sleeper blanket swaddles the baby to increase sleep duration and keeps the baby in a correct sleeping position on his or her back, which reduces the danger of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

The creators, Carol Betz and Nicola Pieters, said nighttime for their little ones was stressful.

Betz, 45, said her daughter Jessica often got cold at night, and Betz panicked one time when she found a blanket over Jessica’s head.

Pieters, 37, said her son Austin often got overheated at night.

“When our children were 4 or 5 months old, we got together and started to build the Guardian Sleeper,” Pieters said. “After several months, we had a workable prototype.”

“Our goal is to get the Guardian Sleeper out there to as many people as possible, so they don’t have to struggle the way we did,” Pieters said.
