To say that Kim and Cary Doehring are in the shipping biz misses the point.
In the billions of dollars of goods that cross in the stratosphere over Memphis, they crate and ship the elite loads: million-dollar Monets, jet engines, printing presses and high-end antiques, including one very authentic home plate from Yankee Stadium, shipped for Avron Fogelman.
“We build the crating and packaging, but we can also do the shipping,” said Cary Doehring.
In five years, company revenues have gone from $25 million to the $47 million projected for 2007.
In Memphis, with FedEx Corp., Northwest Airlines, UPS and the companies that supply them, the Doehrings found a growing market for shipping oversize aeronautical parts, including wings.
They’ve gone after it, giving them confidence to pursue industrial work in other sectors, including dismantling plants for companies moving operations off-shore.
“I want to get into larger things, including supplying total plant moves,” Cary Doehring said.
“Our stores had 36-inch doors like any other business, which means you can’t get larger boxes out the door. It didn’t take me long to figure out there was a big need for the big stuff, and that there was more money in it,” Craters & Freighters founder Diane Gibson said.
