Get Your Words 'Tweaked' By TweakMyWords

I recently got the pleasure to exchange emails with a woman who will put your grammar mistakes in their place. That’s right, I’m talking about Belinda Bombei of TweakMyWords.com. If you find yourself needing a human proof-reader, you can submit what you wrote to the website where you can get it checked for as little as $2 per page. The cost depends on how soon you need the job done.
Belinda is an inspiration to any mom out there that has been considering, or would like to start, their own home business based around things they enjoy.
TweakMyWords.com is a very interesting business idea, how did you come up with it?
I needed to come up with a completely flexible business concept. I looked at my skills, what I like to do, and my experience and this all pointed to a writing and editing business. I needed the business to be virtual, with minimal face-to-face or telephone contact because I have two small children whose need for my attention increases ten-fold when I’m not paying attention to them, so this pointed to a website transaction. The concept of editing academic papers is based on the large demographic of college students who are comfortable with Internet based services and paying on the Internet. Osteopathic medical editing arose from trying to find a truly unique niche, and as I have over five years experience editing the Osteopathic Family Physician News and there is not one other editor out there promoting themselves as an osteopathic medical editor — it seemed a natural focus for my business.
How long did it take before you were able to get your business up and running?
I started staying home with my children full-time, three years ago. It wasn’t until my youngest started going to preschool a few days a week that I felt comfortable taking on the additional work hours. I started developing the website in April 2007 and Tweakmywords.com became operational Thanksgiving 2007.
How many steps did you have to go through to get it started?
1st step was to create and fine-tune the concept. Who was I going to target to provide what services?
2nd step was to create a design theme.
3rd step was to hire a programmer to develop the website.
4th step was beta testing.
5th step was fixing issues that arose in beta testing.
6th step was public relations.
7th step was implementing marketing.
When do you find the time to manage your business and your family?
I’ve found that I cannot try and multi task between my family and my work during the day. We all become frustrated pretty fast. So, two days a week both my children are in preschool at the same time, which gives me six hours of working time. I try to set up play dates for my girls with their friends, so that they don’t pay attention to Mom and go down in their playroom and play for an hour or two. A couple times a week, when my husband gets home, I’ll go to my office for an hour while he cooks dinner. Then on the weekends, if I have a project that needs substantial time to complete, my husband will take the girls to the local children’s museum or down to his parents for the afternoon.
Is their anything in your past that you find has helped you with your business now?
Everything in my past has prepared me for Tweakmywords.com. My education, both my double major in English and Journalism and Masters in Marketing Communications, has given me the confidence to believe in my ideas and my point-of-view. What I think has value. My work experience has taught me that I’m good at what I do. Couple my education with work experience and I knew that I could create a successful at-home business that allows me to stay home with my kids.
Do you have any advice for other mom’s who would like to start their own work-at-home mom business?
