MJennings Designs Is Not Just Another Jewelry Business

MJennings Designs is not just another jewelry business because this hand crafted beaded jewelry is a business that Melissa Jennings, a work-at-home mom, runs inbetween taking care of her own family. Her jewelry is personalized for each person. Including jewelry that features your name or the names of people you love.

What inspired you to open your business, MJennings Designs, LLC?

I began beading as a hobby. My mother is who got me interested in beading when we took our first class together. She encouraged me to start my business because I really enjoyed beading and had decided to become a stay at home mom.

What different types of jewelry do you make? What are the most common styles you receive requests for?

I make personalized name bracelets and keychains as well as Beaded Earrings, Key Chains, Book Marks, Cell Phone Charms, Watches, Necklaces, Bracelets, Lanyards, and Rosaries. I also make wedding and prom jewelry, offer repair and add a strand services and offer in home beading workshops and parties.

The most most common styles I get requests for are personalized name bracelets and keychains as well as custom designed theme charm bracelets.

How long did you make jewelry before you decided to start selling it?

1 1/2 years

I know you have a three year old son, when do you find the time to work?

I work during naptime and in the evening once my husband gets home from work. I also work on the weekends.

How many steps did you have to take before your business was ready to be launched?

First I applied with the Secretary of State to become an LLC-Limited Liability Company. After that I applied to the I.R.S. I then filed with the Kentucky Department of Revenue. I then applied for my local business license. It was a lot of paperwork but I found that everyone I talked too through the process was a lot of help.

Do you have any advice for other crafty moms who are looking to start their own business selling items they make?

I would suggest going to thinkkentucky.com and downloading the KY Business Guide. It gives you a step by step guide on what you need to do to legally start your own business.
