Mom Surrounds Herself With 'Smarty Pants'

The Frederick News-Post Online:

Shannon McKenzie grew up in a suburb of Seattle. Now she lives in Urbana, considered by many to be a suburb of Washington.

But the difference between the two big cities on opposite coasts is striking, she says. “In Seattle, people are in touch with the outdoors. They’re laid back.”

The dress code isn’t conservative and formal, the way it is in Washington.

“In Seattle, you see guys in Crocs and jeans,” she said. “In the middle of the day in D.C., it’s all suits.”

Her husband is one of those suited businessmen. She prefers to work from home — in more casual attire.

Five days a week, her 4-year-old daughter, Bailey, is joined by a number of other pre-schoolers in the basement of the McKenzies’ house. There they get a full day of education.

“I developed a preschool that goes all day,” McKenzie said.

“I started ‘Smarty Pants’ because a friend in the Mom’s Club was looking for child care and she asked if I’d watch her daughter. I looked around and found no quality care, so I decided to get licensed.”

McKenzie’s enrollment is now at the maximum, she said, and she seldom has openings.
