Julia Clapp is carrying on a family tradition in Murfreesboro — and those with a sweet tooth couldn’t be happier.
Clapp and her husband, Roger, opened Julia’s Home Style Bakery in November in The Oaks shopping center on Medical Center Parkway. The bakery is next to the Pei Wei Asian Diner.
Clapp’s mom owns the original Home Style Bakery, which opened in 1973 at the intersection of Murfreesboro and Bell roads in Antioch. Clapp and her siblings grew up working at the bakery.
Clapp said the decision to open a bakery in Murfreesboro was quite easy.
“I know what the bakery in Antioch offers, and there was not a place like that here,” she said.
The Clapps, who have lived in Murfreesboro for about 15 years, also wanted to provide their children, Roger Jr. and Lauren, with a family-owned business they could operate in the future.
The bakery carries much of the same items as the one in Antioch, including the award-winning chocolate fudge pie.
“That pie won the blue ribbon in the Tennessee State Fair for 10 or 12 years. We stopped putting it in to give everyone else a chance,” Clapp said.
Custom cakes are the bulk of business at the Antioch store, and Clapp expects that to catch on here as well.
Clapp said everything is baked on site by a master baker and five baking assistants seven days a week and they always use fresh ingredients.
