Can Internet Mishaps Affect Your Home Biz?

HomeBizNotes:

Most of you probably heard about the Internet cables in the Mediterranean north of Egypt that were cut recently, disrupting service in that area and others further east. At first there were two and then a third became known according to an article at BBC News.

The incident caused disruption to 70% of the nationwide internet network in Egypt, while India suffered up to 60% disruption. With business outsourcing services to the third world, this could even cause a small business headaches.

  • Are you prepared with back-up of your records and inventories?
  • Can you contact your customers without the use of the computer?
  • Do you have the ability to keep in touch with your customers/clients by phone?
  • Is any part of your production powered by the Internet?
  • Can you do ordering, filling orders, banking if the Internet goes down?

Think about what you would do if you didn’t have Internet access.

  • Most people don’t backup their stuff until one day they find that a hard drive has died and they’ve lost a few years work. Then they back up.
Funnily enough I had a failure of a 250Gb hard drive the other day… totally dead. I had a backup though.
To be really sure, you need a third backup in a remote location, updated once a fortnight or something – then if you have the misfortune to be hit by fire / flood etc you don’t lose your info.
