I’ve done quite a few interviews with moms that own a business or work from home in the US. This time it’s different. This mom makes her blankets where she lives in Canada. Andi’s L’il Monkey blankets are each unique just like the child that’ll be receiving it. They’re also personalized with a name or whatever word it is that you’d like put on the blanket for your child. Made from fleece, they’re soft and keep the child warm.
What was your inspiration behind L’il Monkeys?
When I found out we were having twins, I made each of them a blanket with their name….people started to ask me where they could buy a similar blanket and it all just came together from there. The name was inspired by our monkeys, Emma and Alexis.
What inspired the unique style of your blankets?
I noticed that our girls loved to chew on their stuffed animal tags, hence the tags on the edges. The waffle fleece was the softest fleece I could find.
How long has it been since you decided to start your business? When was your business born?
2 years officially, but was born in October 2004 with the birth of our girls.
How have you managed the time to work on your blankets and your business around being a mom?
It’s a balancing act and each day is different. Lots of working while they were napping and now that they no longer nap, while they’re at preschool. Evenings too once they’re asleep.
Do you have any advice for other moms out there looking to start a business of their own?
Do your research and make sure there is a demand for your product/service. Make sure you can balance it all!
Most of all, try not to lose sight of your first job: being a mom! Have fun! I can’t believe how quickly out girls are growing up. It’s all happening so fast!
