Media-Newswire.com:

Small Business Minister Margaret Quirk will launch a book on Monday honouring the achievements of 12 Western Australian businesswomen.

The book, ‘Women in Business: Twelve Inspiring Stories’ is an initiative of the Small Business Development Corporation ( SBDC ) and is designed to raise the profile of women business operators through the State.

Ms Quirk said each of the 12 women had contributed to their local community by creating economic diversity, employment for others and vibrancy for their region.

“Whether they are running the local pet grooming salon, exporting their range of skincare products, building and selling farm machinery or travelling the world buying the rarest of banknotes and coins on behalf of investors, these women show, on a daily basis, how extraordinary things can be achieved,” she said.

“Today, the direction and development of the small business sector in WA is enjoying a distinctly female influence - an influence founded on the rich history of women’s enterprise since the early days of the Swan settlement.”

The Minister said women’s influence in business could be seen by such examples as:

the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of WA being chaired by Dr Penny Flett;
the Regional Chambers of Commerce being led by its president Kitty Prodonovich; and
the board of the SBDC being chaired by Patria Jafferies.
“As WA’s first female Minister for Small Business, I am especially proud that women are exerting such a positive and energetic influence on the State’s business community,” Ms Quirk said.

Many of the 12 women featured in the book are also winners of small business or industry specific awards.

The purpose of the publication is to raise the profile of women business operators throughout WA and its launch has been timed around International Women’s Day events which commences on March 8.

Women owned businesses are starting to show up in the news more often, and with good reason. The percentage of woman starting a business is continuing to rise more than ever before. Women are starting to see the advantages that mostly men had seen in the past. What Minister Margaret Quirk is doing by publishing the stories of these 12 women is helping motivate other women in Australia to also follow down that same entrepreneurial path.
