The Murray Valley Standard:

Entrepreneurial spirit is strong in the Murraylands, particularly among women.

Women in the region are striving in business whether it be owning their own company or within managerial roles.

A report commissioned by Westpac shows women in business in regional or rural areas get a head start on their city counterparts.

“In regional Australia, almost two-thirds of women who started a business tended to be under 35, compared to 44 per cent of city based businesswomen,” Westpac women’s markets head Larke Riemer said.

The Australian Women in Business - New Insights report says regional businesswomen are more likely to have worked in a different industry before starting at their present business and this suggested they were prepared to take risks, give new things a try and have a higher level of flexibility.

“Generally, women in small business plan more effectively and focus on the long term, as well as short term planning,” Ms Riemer said.

“This suggests women have higher levels of concern about the unknown than their male counterparts.”

Murraylands Regional Development Board chief executive Brenton Lewis said businesswomen tended to be good planners.

“They know exactly what they want to do and they have a far better idea of how they want to do it,” Mr Lewis said.

Women in this specific region of Australia are starting to grow in business. They are also starting younger compared to women in the city. Their are other benefits that women tend to have over men that is showing to be a benefit for each business that’s being started.
