A New Way to “Meet Up”?

Is connecting people people from online to offline just about dating? Meetup’s idea is to change all that bymeetup connecting people by much more than just those looking for some romance…

SeaCoastOnline.com:

When it comes to devising ways for people to connect with one another, I think that the Internet site Meetup.com may be the greatest invention since, well, sliced bread. Last month somebody tipped me off to Meetup.com, and even though it actually has been around for a while, I was totally unaware of the concept. So I checked it out, and I was blown away.

I realized that if I hadn’t heard about Meetup.com yet, the odds are that many of you probably were unaware of its existence.Of course a growing number of single (and divorced) men and women try to match people through Internet dating sites or dating services. Meetup.com changes everything.

Anyone with an interest in almost anything can find a group of people to “meet up” with, from dogs (Club Canine in Portsmouth has a Seacoast Active Dogs Group with 55 members), to politics (the Seacoast Ron Paul Group has 84 members), to the arts (the Dover Writers Group has 66 members).

Keep in mind isn’t limited to just dog lovers and arts and crafts, anyone could take advantage of meetup. Why not create a group gathering at your small business?

Meetup works so well in London. You can really find so nice and interesting people. I especially liked the meeting about charity work in developing countries and I’ve learned so much from real personal experiences of other members, whom all that day were from different countries. It is also free of charge.
The real problem is sometimes, that there are simply too many different interest groups/activities… ):

I wonder what makes this site different from other social networking sites. I wasn’t blown away when i visited the site.

I guess this is something new since the site really focuses on social networking rather than dating.

This site makes it easier for everyone to find their own place in cyber space.

Hi Melanie, I like it, because it is not so much for the cyber space, but about real meetings and chatting/talking in a group - not virtual.

Hey curt, turns out Nicholas is true to his words because meetup.com can really blow you away. I wasn’t too keen to visit the site since i thought it would be just another myspace or friendster but thank goodness it’s not.

What i really like about the site so far is that it has people fighting for what seems to be a good cause.

Thanks Melanie! Just an example of my first meeting in one pub at Leicester Square in London: USA, UK, China, South Africa, Nigeria, Greece, Slovenia - I met truly very interesting people from these countries and we exchanged loads of practical experiences considering charitable activities in developing countries. We also had some drinks and we spent a few nice hours 6pm-10pm.

Curt: So you mean to say you’ve been to my country? *laughs.

I think i might love the site. People who are passionate about fighting for something will definitely do.

This is a great place to find people with similar interests. You can even look for people in your own state or city.

I’ve been a member of meetup.com for a short time, but have met good people with similar interests through several groups! I feel like I’ve made long term friendships, not just acquaintances. What’s nice is that it’s NOT about dating or romance. It’s about getting together with people and doing things together that you all enjoy!
