Seamstress Owns Business
Lynn Ellis, 50, of Staunton has been sewing since the sixth grade, when she took a sheet from her mother and made her first pair of jeans.
“My mom had a sewing machine, and I thought it was fascinating,” Ellis said. “I though I’d make a cool pair of hip-hugger, bell-bottom jeans.”
Those jeans might not have been crafted to perfection, but Ellis has spent decades honing her skill. In 2000 she opened Fabric Creations in Staunton, specializing in custom clothing alterations and tailoring — though she’s been in the business for nearly 20 years.
“In 1990 I went self-employed, doing bridesmaids dresses for a lady in my church, and it branched out from there,” she said.
Ellis said she can’t imaging doing anything else for a living.
“It’s rewarding for me to give people exactly what they’re looking for,” she said. “It makes me feel good when they look in the mirror and say, ‘Oh my God!’”
