10 Things You Should/Shouldn’t Do As A Telecommuter

You Should…
Let your neighbors know that you ARE employed, you just work from home. In this messy economy, people may suspect the worst when they suddenly realize your car no longer leaves the driveway at 6 a.m. Be proactive before donated canned goods arrive on your doorstep.

You Shouldn’t…
Farm out your work to an intern. Sure, she could use the credits and the real-world work experience, but it’s just not right.

You Should…
Dispel myths. When I tell people I work from home, they ask, “How do you get any work done?” Well, I enjoy getting a paycheck. In fact, I even look forward to it. I get work done because if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be working. Then I wouldn’t get paid. So please let people know that just because you work at home, you still need to actually work.

You Shouldn’t…
Blog about telecommuting. You have real work to do. And your last entry about watching that “The Twilight Zone” marathon on the Sci-Fi channel instead of getting back to that “annoying guy” in marketing might land you in The Unemployment Zone.

  • This is cute. It is a sign of transition in people’s mindsets when you have to now think about explaining why you do not actually get into a car each morning and leave for 8~10 hours and somehow still manage to keep the lights on.

    In this day and age with technology encouraging the “out of office” experience, why not take advantage of it?

    More and more companies will begin to trust their employees and allow them to telecommute simply because it is cost efficient. The down side? They still haven’t worked out issues like taxes, insurance and healthcare for those off-site workers.

  • If it wasn’t for the few people that do know I am self-employed most people would just figure I’m a hermit.

    I try to set down the rules with friends when it comes to me working. Sometimes they forget that I can’t just drop everything to talk on the phone because they’re bored.

  • When you work at home there is always a lot of distractions.It´s important to explain to the family that you need to work even if you are at home all day.It takes a special mindset for working at home.

    This line actually made me laugh a bit. I remember how my sister says that i’m so lucky since i just work from home. Lucky? Haha it’s the same thing as working in the office, only you are home.
