Entrepreneurial Mom Fights Against Sleep Deprivation
Shannon Karpinski had woken in the night one too many times to face a soiled diaper, night clothes and bed linens, too. Sleep-deprived and desperate, this new mom took matters into her own hands and designed the Baby Bumsie.
Similar to the ever-popular Onesie, a Baby Bumsie snaps between the legs to keep baby’s torso warm and covered, but it also has a three-layer thick, removable back panel. If the diaper leaks through, with a few quick snaps, it’s right back to bed for Karpinski and her baby.
“It was always right up the back,” Karpinski said. “I wanted a Onesie that I would never have to drag over her head. I have talked to parents who actually have cut Onesies off of their baby,” said Karpinksi. A Baby Bumsie comes with an extra back panel to snap into place.
After a particularly rough night for mother and baby, Karpinski went to a seamstress.
“I paid $80 for her to make it for me,” she said. “I didn’t have a business in mind, just a good night’s sleep.”
Karpinski began talking to other new parents and found there is a real shift towards breastfeeding which causes more frequent blowouts messes. Parents are bombarded with things designed to make life easier, she said.
“Things for the baby are thrown at you and I never knew what was really essential and what was not. This would have been an essential for me,” she said. Many agreed that this could be one of those things that makes a parent’s life much easier, she said.
