Help Name Baby, Again!

Update: Greyson Carlson has been born, and his name came as a direct result of these comments. Thank you!

My wife and I are expecting our a new baby, our third boy, in a few weeks and just like last time we haven’t picked a name yet!

Please help name the baby!

Our name rules:

  1. It can’t be too popular. Our first son’s name, Emerson, is number 755 on this list. Our second, Franklin, is #468.
  2. It shouldn’t be too obscure and difficult to spell.
  3. It shouldn’t start with an E or an F. It would be neat if it started with a G, but that’s not a requirement.
  4. No cities names. I have a set of cousin’s named after cities, so that’s their trend.

Please post your suggestions in the comments.

(To make things interesting, if we use your name, and you’re the first person to suggest it, I’ll send you a $100 Amazon or iTunes gift certificate. Contest ends when the baby is born. Spread the word!)

Gustavus is a pretty uncommon first name, I’d think. (pronounced gus-tay-vus).

  • Chet Kuhn on June 26th, 2008 at 12:20 pm

Well, of course it should be Greyson. It fits with the G theme, it fits with the sound of the other names, and you can call him ‘Grey’, which is a cool sounding name!

    Gandolf or Gandolph
Merle.. ah.. not a G name
Reuben … there I go again..
GADIEL - a biblical name meaning ‘god is my good fortune.’ extremely rare these days, this would make a great name, fitting in with all the Gabriels and Nathaniels out there.
    GALEN
GAMALIEL - /guh MAH lee el/ an Old Testament name meaning ‘god rewards with good.’ It was the middle name of US president Harding.
    GARETH
    GENYA
GERMÁN: Pronounced /hayr MON/, this elegant Spanish name comes from the Latin meaning ‘brother.’
    GERSHON
    GIDEON

    Hmm… name for a baby…

On first thought I go by one of my favorite book writers Robert Jordan who wrote a story about a boy named Perrin (well he’s more like a side-character though).

Since my head seems empty and I want a candidate starting with g too, I’ll just think about the other guys in Jordan’s books… hmm… Galad and Gawyn I think are the names of some prince-brothers in the Wheel of Time series.

Darn, I didn’t read through the names already submitted before I did some thinking and research!

Some of the names I came up with are already mentioned! Maybe when I tell you why I chose them you’ll consider a little added bonus if you choose one! :-)

First, thinking about Franklin and Emerson, I was thinking about names that end with “n.”

Then I thought about famous Franklins and Emersons…Benjamin Franklin, FDR, Franklin Mint and Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Emerson(Emerson Electric).

So we have a few threads to follow:

Benjamin Franklin, FDR and Ralph Waldo Emerson were all involved in American history/politics - Emerson in political thought.

Benjamin Franklin and Ralph Waldo Emerson:
    both were authors
    both born in Boston
Franklin lived in the 1700’s, Emerson and FDR the in the 1800’s

Franklin Mint and Emerson Electric are both successful companies.

Emerson means “son of the noble.”
Franklin means “enriched with great possessions.”

Based on all that, here’s what I’ve come up with:

    Grayson
▪Grayson Perry, artist, living in 1900-2000’s, born in Suffolk, England)

  • Jeanne Breault on June 29th, 2008 at 12:36 pm

Oops, must have hit enter by mistake! :-)

    ▪ Richard Grayson, author, living in 1900-2000’s, born in Brooklyn, ran for AZ Congressional Seat earlier this year

Grayson means “son of the gray-haired man,” which doesn’t really relate to Franklin and Emerson meanings!

    Gavin
    ▪ John Gavin, actor a la Rock Hudson, lived in 1900’s, born in LA, named Ambassador to Mexico by Reagan in 1980’s

Gavin means “little hawk,” again not related to Franklin and Emerson meanings.

    Garrison
    ▪ Garrison Keillor, author/storyteller/musician, living in 1900-2000’s, born in Minnesota, political essayist

Garrison means “place where troops are stationed, for the defense of a town or fort”

    Gibson
    ▪ Orville Gibson, founder of Gibson Guitars, eccentric who made stringed instruments, lived in 1800-1900’s, born in New York

Gibson means “son of Gilbert, trusted”

    Griffin
▪Merv Griffin, tv show host/producer/creator, businessman, lived in 1900-2000’s, born in LA,

▪W.E.B. Griffin, author, living in 1900-2000’s, born in New York

    Griffin meanss “to give”

    Goddard
    ▪ Robert Goddard, born in Boston, scientist/inventor, lived in 1800-1900’s, no “vowel-n”

    Goddard means “God-like disposition”

    Graham
▪Alexander Graham Bell, scientist/writer, lived in 1800-1900’s, born in Scotland, no “vowel-n”

Graham means “having a fierce and stern look, courageous”

Congrats on baby #3 - how exciting! Thanks for the chance to play “name the baby.” It was fun!

Our eldest son’s name is Calder. It rhymes with balder. We got more bland after him, but if is certainly an interesting name. We call him Cal sometimes.

I have four sons and wish I would have named one of them Forrest and another Harrison.

We have a Drew also (after Nancy).

We have an Ethan, but so does everyone else in the entire universe.

Our last son is named Jack. Just Jack. I love his name, but you can see the progression here. We got more and more simple. If we had had another son we would have just named him “boy”.

  • Judith on June 29th, 2008 at 8:49 pm

We love the name “Carter” - not too common but not too difficult - congrats on the baby boy!

  • Nancy on July 4th, 2008 at 10:26 am

In the 1960’s I worked with a guy named Galen and I loved the name and in all these years I’ve never meant another Galen. Congratz and good luck with your new addition.

“Lachlan” is a boy’s name that’s fairly common here in Australia but it doesn’t seem to be on that list of top USA names. (Pronounced Locklan, often called Lockie for short).

Another one I like (my nephew’s name) is Rohan (also spelt Rowan) which is 534 on the list.

  • Scarlett on July 7th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

I have two boys myself, and working on a third baby… First one was easy to name - just think of the best boy name you can, right? Second one didn’t get a name until 4 days before he was born. I’m scared to think what will happen if we have a third boy! So anyway, here’s my short list:

Hayden (my older son, and therefore the BEST name)

    Isaac (my younger son)

Piers (fought hard for this one for son #2. Hubby said no)

    Weston

    Brennan

    Desmond (I’m a huge LOST fan…)

    Why not D, E, F or do you prefer E, F, G?

    Caiden

    Daunte

    Tristan

    Parker

What about good old fashioned “George” for a name? It is not as rare as you would probably be shooting for, but not too many people seem to be naming their boys “George” these days so it will be refreshingly different (I don’t know anyone under 35 named George).

If it had been a girl, I would have suggested Gurlinda/Gerlinda just to be different.

My son’s name, who was named after one of my brothers: Locke

you can either pronounce with the “e” on the end or not, just like Lock, we pronounce it without the “e”, usually but sometimes I use the “e” when my son is home. He prefers the pronunciation without the “e” from his friends and teachers, etc.

My son’s name is: Locke Paul xxxx

There is a famous philosopher John Locke
so it has been used as a surname, but we used it as a first name.

It is very different and I have never heard anyone else with the name other than my brother and my son and I really like it.

All the best to you and your family, it’s lovely to have a new baby on the way.

  • Carlos Rizo on July 9th, 2008 at 11:25 am

    Congratulations on your new baby.

Every child is unique and yours deserves a unique name. My suggestion is Gabor. It is different (not listed on the 1000 more frequent names), is not difficult to spell, it is not a city, and starts with ‘G’.

You may have seen ‘Gabor’ as a last name perhaps because of Dennis Gabor, a British physicist, born in Hungary, inventor of holography, and Nobel prize 1971.

It can be used as a name also (my watchmaker’s name is Gabor).

    Congratulations again.

I’ve just read through all these names and didn’t see my maiden name, which my daughter has used as a middle name for her second son.

    Garnett

It’s a strong, powerful, individual name.

You and your wife have already chosen wonderful strong names for your sons, and I think Garnett would suit you all.

Good luck to your wife and the new life entering your family.

  • Diana Ward on July 12th, 2008 at 7:48 am

I vote for Galen. It has an illustrious history and matches the level of sophistication of the names of your first two sons:

Emerson, Franklin, Galen, I envy your wife in getting to shout those names so often over the next 20 years.

These are ones that are all from last names:

Spenser after the English poet (my favorite)
Baldwin after the author James Baldwin, it’s English in origin, also
    Gordon, also English origin
    Beckett, author, English origin

Good luck not picking too popular a name. When we chose Aidan, we didn’t know anyone with that name. It was the name of my husband’s best childhood friend’s dad and dh always said if he had a son, he wanted to name him Aidan. And, now, I see it might be the most popular name in 2015. That’s just crazy! lol

  • iVONNE on July 12th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

    Gavyn
    Gary
    Gerald
    German

Congratulations on your new baby and best wishes for Emerson & Franklin!

Griffin is the obvious choice. It’s a G, it has the same sounding ending as Emerson and Franklin, and it is not too popular.

Sorry you didn’t get the girl. Go for 4 I guess.

  • Barbara on July 17th, 2008 at 2:25 pm

How about Malcolm Ian? Flows nicely with Carlson, #478 on list so not too popular, and not difficult to pronounce or spell.

  • g Daniel on July 17th, 2008 at 4:59 pm

    Graham
    Gibson
    Grayson
    Garrett

  • Resa on July 17th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

we have a hudson elliot and a wesley graham (kind of like the surnames)

i saw this already- but love Harrison and Grayson (for the G)

    Trenton?
Owen? is that a common name these days?
    Cale? Calen?
    Wyatt?
    Cole?

Congrats. Boys are the best! Enjoy. Let us know what you pick, because we are in the biz of babies and awesome cloths that show off your hard work choosing the perfect name.

  • Joy Ramos Davis on July 18th, 2008 at 7:59 am

    Dear Dane:
I’ve always like Preston. What’s even better is to see what symbols show up from God at the time of birth so that you know what to call him. This is an aboriginal Australian tradition.

By the way, I changed my name at 18 to reflect who I really am inside.

    Joy

  • Lilly on July 18th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
