Mom Commits To Baby Sleep Safety

Many parents all have the same crib-related fears when their children are babies. Whether it’s the unpredictable reality of SIDS, blanket suffocation or other potential injuries that can be incurred. SleepaRoo takes those worries head on with a new, secure sleep system.
The system is an easy one to use. From the support used to hold the baby on their back while they sleep, to the secured blanket which will not get kicked over the face while laying down. Only a product like this could be from someone who knows from experience how important baby sleep safety is; a parent.
Stacey Battersby, a mom and the creator of SleepaRoo, has been able to get her product placed in a variety of Ontario stores including, Baby World’s, Dear Born Baby, In The Pouch, and many more which can be found listed on her website.
What is the SleepaRoo?
SleepaRoo is an innovative design in infant crib bedding. It allows parents to follow many of the Canadian Health Recommendations to safely putting their infant (0-12 months) to bed.
What are some of the safety benefits?
SleepaRoo comes complete with a fitted sheet, a built in sleep support and a blanket. After placing the infant in their back to sleep, the built in sleep support allows the infant to remain on their back to sleep and in the middle of the crib. This prevents the infant from rolling into the crib rails and getting their arms and leg caught.
SleepaRoo allow has a built in blanket that is attached to the fitted sheet with a zipper at the foot of the crib. This allows the infant to remain warm and covered, without being able to pull the blanket up and over their face.
How many colors is it available in, what are they?
SleepaRoo is currently available in two neutral colours with corresponding prints. Yellow with ducks and Green with bubbles.
These colours can easily coordinate with any decor, and isn’t gender specific.
What inspired the idea?
The inspiration came from my daughter Kate. As new parents, we followed the Canadian Health Recommendations with regards to crib safety. This included no bumper pads, no heavy quilts, no loose blankets and of course always putting your baby on their back to sleep. At 3 months old she was becoming very active in her crib which resulted in her getting her arms / legs caught in the crib rails. Kate would also have bruises on her head.
As a mom, I searched the baby market for a solution and didn’t find any product that could address all of these major issues. So, I designed my own sleep system to keep my new baby safe and give me peace of mind!
How did you go about taking it from idea to final product? What was the process?
After designing many proto types, I obtained patent pending protection in Canada and the US. I then found a local manufacturer Kushies Baby, and they agreed to manufacture SleepaRoo.
I then had the packaging designed, website created and began marketing the finished product to the local baby stores and at tradeshows.
How long has it been since you launched your business?
I began the initial concepts of SleepaRoo in February 2007, and the actual product hit the retail market in January 2008.
Was there any advice you read or heard that helped inspire you?
My passion for SleepaRoo was to simply help any new parents with the issues that I struggled with; trying to find peace of mind when putting an infant to bed. Being a new parent is very overwhelming and if I could provide a simple solution to help parents with crib safety, then the it is worth all the challenges!
What kind of advertising have you found most successful, why?
Currently, I have found that being at tradeshows and demonstrating the product is the most effective. Since SleepaRoo is a completely new concept in infant bedding, many parents need to touch and see the product being demonstrated in order to understand the concepts.
How do you manage your time between business and your family?
Balancing time between work and family is a challenge for any parent; regardless if they work inside or outside of the home. My challenge is that I can work when my daughter is taking a nap or in bed for the evening. Because I have a passion for the product, work is something I enjoy doing.
Do you have any advice for the mom’s out there interested in making a business out of an idea they might have?
My advice for any moms, would be to research your business / product intensively! Owning a business is a huge commitment financially and emotionally. Just like your own baby, your business need nurturing, time and attention in order for it to grow. Be prepared to put in a great deal of effort with little or no return in the first few years. At times it can be overwhelming, but if you truly love what you do, then it is worth it!
