Insight News:

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) has been awarded $2 million from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration to build the entrepreneurial skills of dislocated workers fifty and older.

“This award allows Minnesota to build on our existing efforts to help dislocated workers take greater ownership of their careers through entrepreneurship,” said DEED Commissioner Dan McElroy. “We’ve had success with similar past federal demonstration projects, and this will help Minnesota create something even better.”

The pilot will make money available to qualifying individuals statewide to learn more about entrepreneurship, build a business plan and other essentials, and find the resources necessary to launch their new business.

Activities include training and counseling on specific entrepreneurship topics.

To qualify, an individual must be eligible for the federal Dislocated Worker program, be at least fifty-years-old, and undergo a short assessment by their Dislocated Worker counselor. Interested individuals should contact their nearest WorkForce Center (1-888-GET-JOBS) to find out if they qualify.
