Amazon unveiled two new payment options that allow Web site owners to shift payment transactions to the online retailer.
With Checkout by Amazon, webmasters will get help from Amazon in managing shipping charges, sales tax, promotions, and post-sale activities including shipments, refunds, cancellations, and charge backs.
Amazon Simple Pay, meanwhile, is a less complicated option for those who don’t need Amazon’s end-to-end checkout pipeline and order management capabilities.
To enable Checkout by Amazon, webmasters must add Amazon 1-Click to their Amazon.com account and insert a few lines of code into their Web site template. When customers go to check out of the site, they click the “Checkout with Amazon” button, a widget pops up asking for a shipping address, and customers buy via Amazon’s 1-Click. Amazon sends them a confirmation e-mail, and users remain on your site.
Buyers can view the status of their order via Amazon Payments, but not on Amazon.com. The service is currently only available to webmasters in the United States, though customers can ship to international locations.
Accepted credit cards include: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, JCB, or Diner’s Club credit cards from cardholders with a U.S. billing address.
There are no minimum fees, start-up charges, or contracts involved with Checkout by Amazon, but there are charges associated with final sale value. For transactions of $10 or more, for example, there is a charge of 2.9 percent plus 30 cents. Those sales less than $10 incur a 5 percent fee plus 5 cents.
You can sell “physical and digital” goods, but no porn, alcohol, drugs, firearms, or gambling businesses, among other things.
