Despite the government giving consumers the okay to eat tomatoes, lawmakers on Capitol Hill are calling for tougher oversight when it comes to food safety.
The initiative follows what health experts call the worst case of food-borne illness in a decade.
The reality of tainted food prompted a Green Bay company to invent a product that uses nature to battle bacteria on your plate.
“There’s a few things that customers want when they go to a restaurant; They want quality, they want a good price, they want to feel good about their meal,” says Al Smith. “This system is one extra way of achieving that.”
He spends most of his day in restaurants. Not eating, but selling. His product? A fancy way to wash food.
This metal, shoebox-sized device is a Veripure system, developed by a Green Bay company.
“The hose runs right from the unit to the end of their faucet,” says Smith.
What comes out of that faucet is water packed with gas particles that wipe out not only dirt and bugs, but virtually all bacteria.
This box is producing ozone, a naturally made product in the environment. There are no chemicals in the system
“Ozone itself has been around forever this particular application is fairly new,” says Smith. “And again it’s just something to help ensure food safety and that’s what were all about.
