Sugar Buzz Hits Carmel Arts District
Nestled between chic clothiers, eateries and art purveyors in the Carmel Arts & Design District lies a hidden treasure for children and parents alike. Sugar Buzz Sweet Parties for Kids, 251 1st St. S.W. adds yet a new dimension to the diverse services and amenities taking root in Old Town Carmel.
Sugar Buzz founder Wendy Reed, a graduate of Carmel High School, is thrilled to bring her growing business to the bustling Main Street area from its former home in Broad Ripple Village.
“I had a shop in Broad Ripple for years,” Reed said. “The revitalization of Carmel and its emphasis on the arts reminds me of the vibe that used to be in the ‘old’ Broad Ripple. Mayor Brainard’s emphasis on the arts is so enticing for someone like me, who makes their living in that field.”
Sugar Buzz, which creates fantasy celebrations for children in its custom party space or on the road, is known for its fantastic themes. To create its signature, second-to-none events, Sugar Buzz starts with a team of very special, creative people that love kids. For example, its on-staff face painters are some of the best around, featured on the national stage at events including the National Star Wars convention and Indianapolis Colts games.
Reed herself is much of the magic that is Sugar Buzz. She has performed throughout Indianapolis as a jazz vocalist for more than 25 years, with regular weekly engagements at hot spots such as Sullivan’s at Keystone Square and Ruth’s Chris Steak House downtown. She is regularly sought-out to sing at local events, such as the recent kick-off ceremony for Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration. In fact, Reed was voted Best Local Female Musician/Vocalist in the July 2008 issue of Indianapolis Woman magazine — her first time winning the award.
Reed’s 9-year-old son is much of her inspiration for Sugar Buzz. Her concept for the business was born out of the fantastic parties she threw for him, she said. Nowadays, he’s an active participant in mom’s business, helping out with parties and providing a keen view on what’s hot for kids now.
