Jana Miller likes to keep busy. This summer she was able to accomplish that by starting her own business, Fresh Lunch Ideas, as part of the Ontario Ministry of Small Business and Entrepreneurship’s Summer Company program.
The program provides a $1,500 start-up grant for young business owners, and offers workshops on how to be successful in a competitive business world.
Having had such a successful summer making and delivering healthy meal options to individuals and groups all over the Cornwall area, Miller said she’s decided to keep up with the business, despite having to return to the University of Ottawa this fall to complete her final year of nursing.
Miller said she based her summer business on the idea on making healthy meals with locally grown ingredients, and packaging them in environmentally friendly, compostable materials.
This fall, she said the business — along with the weather — is going frozen, and will instead be offering premade dishes that her customers will be able to reheat in the oven or microwave.
“I’ve found that as the weather gets colder people tend to want heartier meals that are served hot, instead of the summer salads and sandwiches I’m serving now,” she said. “I’ll be making lasagnes, stews, chili, things like that that I can prepare in bulk in advance, and then dish out as needed.”

That is an inspiring little business she created and it’s great to see that she’s done so well that she intends to stick with it! Maybe this business will motivate her to take a different route in her life than she originally planned, and find some new passions in life.
