Moms Draw Support From Business Group Of Peers

azcentral.com:

Cindy Nelson loves a challenge, so this busy Gilbert mom of two enjoys owning her own business. She and her husband own Hobby Action in Tempe, a unique shop that specializes in radio control fun.

But being a mom and a small business owner can be tough.

“Owning a business is a lot of hard work,” Nelson said. “I’ve had to learn about all aspects of the business from licensing and bookkeeping to marketing, human resources and everything in between.

“I also work hard at maintaining balance so our family life does not suffer. In doing so, it’s not unusual to find me helping my kids with their homework as I sit next to them working on my own business endeavors.”

One of the places she finds support is the East Valley chapter of the Entrepreneurial Mothers Association.

“As a five-year member, I have gained a lot of business wisdom from EMA’s guest speakers over the years. I have also been inspired by other members in our group and their accomplishments,” Nelson said.

The EMA is a large, strong group of women that meets the first Monday of every month for dinner and a guest speaker. The 70 or so women all either own their own business or are in a commission-based job, and all are mothers or stepmothers.

“Our group of women is amazing,” said EMA President Cathryn Scheeler. “Not only do we have a great dinner and hear amazing speakers, but we get to sit around and talk with one another about business ideas and how to deal with kids. It’s an invaluable opportunity for entrepreneurial women.”
