A Yummy Mommy Is A State Of Mind

Canada.com:

Erica Ehm doesn’t hesitate when she’s asked to describe a yummy mommy. “A yummy mommy is a state of mind, being empowered and passionate about what you do,”says Ehm. “When you feel good, you look good. It isn’t about being skinny. It’s about being healthy and athletic and engaged, not just with your children, but with your peers and your friends, being a lover and an athlete, a sister and a daughter and, of course, a mom to your kids.”

Ehm (”I’m in my 40s”) knows what she’s talking about. Not only is she the mother of two children (Joshua, 8, and Jessie, 4), she has also hosted two successful TV talk shows, Baby and You and the internationally syndicated Yummy Mummy.

These days, when she’s not spending time with her family at home in Toronto, she’s focusing her energies on the Yummy Mummy Club (yummymummyclub.ca), an online magazine devoted entirely to mothers of young children.

It’s not devoted to babies or kids, but to moms and what it’s like to be a mother and a woman in today’s society.

The idea grew out of Ehm’s own experiences as a first-time mother. Canada’s first female VJ (she was a photogenic star on MuchMusic in the 1980s), Ehm hung out with internationally renowned rock stars and celebrities, and generally led a charmed life in the spotlight.

But after her first child was born, that all changed; and after her second child was born, the shift was even more profound, she says. “There was so much emphasis on the kids all the time,” she says. “Everyone forgets about the moms. But the transition from pre-baby to being a mom is so profound, and no one was addressing it. I found it to be very difficult.”

Out of that period in her life came the idea for the Yummy Mummy TV show, which launched in July 2005 on Life Network (now Slice) and was produced until 2006. Shortly after that, the Yummy Mummy website started — first, as a few pages added to Ehm’s personal home page. Then a few more pages. Before long, she had the makings of an online magazine, with stories written by parents across Canada and around the world.
