Don’t Worry, Start A Company

Inc.:

Y Combinator’s Paul Graham makes the case that now is a perfectly fine time to start a company—maybe not a restaurant, he says, but certainly anything in high tech.

Graham writes: “If we’ve learned one thing from funding so many startups, it’s that they succeed or fail based on the qualities of the founders. The economy has some effect, certainly, but as a predictor of success it’s rounding error compared to the founders.”

And: “Fortunately the way to make a startup recession-proof is to do exactly what you should do anyway: run it as cheaply as possible. For years I’ve been telling founders that the surest route to success is to be the cockroaches of the corporate world.

The immediate cause of death in a startup is always running out of money. The cheaper your company is to operate, the harder it is to kill. Fortunately it has gotten very cheap to run a startup, and a recession will if anything make it cheaper still.”

  • I agree that obviously a recession will make starting up a business and running it cheaper. But what i worry about for people starting up a new business right now, is if the economy is in a recession or close to it, that means there is a lot of people without jobs and a lot of people not buying too much or cutting way down on what they buy, so in that respect will the new business actually be making a profit that is worth staying open, or will they be making just enough to keep their heads above water?

  • I started with success my previous company in 2001 and I’m starting a new one in 2008 (http://www.vayton.com, a naming and brand management company). Based on my own experience, recession is good time to start a business if you offer a better service and technological innovations. In the same time, you can rent at a cheaper price and employ talents at a normal salary. In a growing market it is exactly the opposite: high salaries, higher employee turn over, high costs for rent and less efforts in innovation because clients are easier to sign.

  • Here are some of the basic requirements:

    - Must have reliable computer and printer (laptop is a plus)

    - Must have a state issued driver license along with dependable transportation.
