Invention Saves Time And Water In The Shower

North County Times:

Randy Sonderhouse says he knows how easy it is to waste time —- and water —- in the shower. After his wife noticed he was taking unusually long showers, the Murrieta resident decided to invent a solution.

That solution, a water-proof alarm timer Sonderhouse designed, the Shower Professor, is now for sale for $10.

Sonderhouse said the device has helped him reduce his shower time from 15 or 20 minutes down to just 5 minutes. That saves about 25 gallons of water per day, he estimates, as well as the energy used to heat the water.

“The device changes behavior because your time is right in front of you,” Sonderhouse said.

The Shower Professor is made to be simple, Sonderhouse said. It has a digital screen and four buttons. Three buttons are for shower times: 5 minutes, 7 minutes, and 10 minutes. The fourth gives you an extra minute.

Five seconds before the time is up, the alarm goes off —- audible but not annoying, Sonderhouse said.

  • This is bad news for me. I love my long showers. Guarantee you will never see that awful device in my house.

  • Perhaps a bag around a common alarm, or: a loud alarm just outside the shower will do.

  • Matt, your “killing” me. Just think about how much water and energy you are wasting only to make you “feel” better. And, your doing it everyday.

SRS- you could put a bag around a common alarm but how would that look in your shower.

    I appreciate the comments…Randy Inventor

  • I have to agree with Matt…that seems a little silly to me. for one…if it’s that big of a problem in your household then be determined enough to not dilly dally around in the shower. and i have to say that the comment about wasting water just to make yourself “feel” better…yeah…that is a little wrong. I mean come on…what is the harm in someone “feeling” better? nothing really. in fact…do you know how many doctor’s suggest long hot showers or bath’s for a sore muscle of any kind? almost every single one! and if the person is willing to pay the money for the extra water and heat…then so be it.

  • Wow ! sounds like this guy runs green like an army camp.
doesn’t he realize that millions are spent every year on shower massagers for a reason?
people take showers for two reasons.
To get really clean, and to feel better!

  • I think the inventors real concern, why he invent this Shower Professor is to conserve water. And I think his invention is a big help.

  • There are many good reasons for this device – water conservation being the number one reason. Anyone with teenage kids can definitely tell you that their water bills has increased immensely, as well as the amount of shampoo & conditioner that they go through, especially is they have girls.

But, as the kids grow up and move out – and we are left to clean bathrooms with no wet towels strung haphazardly on every available surface, I can tell you that even now with more time and water available to me, I still wouldn’t need this device because I am always mindful of running out of hotwater.

Its a good idea though, and the inventor and marketers best recourse is to market this item to families with teens. This is where their money will come from – I could almost bet my life on that one.
