Mass. Mom Creates Low Sugar Juice For Kids

cbs11tv.com:

When Gloucester mom Karen Barth would go down the grocery aisles looking for a healthy drink for her children, most of the time, she’d come up empty. Her only resort, buy the sugar filled juice and water it down. “As a mother I was very tired fighting with my kids over what to drink.”

So she decided to create her own drink. She spent months in her kitchen concocting mixtures of all natural ingredients: fruit extracts, vegetable colorings, and for a sweetener she used agave syrup, made from a cactus.

“It’s really magic because it tastes really sweet but it doesn’t have a high sugar content,” she said. “And it has a low glycemic index so it doesn’t spike kid’s blood sugar.”

Barth’s children were her taste testers. Nine-year-old Miriam said she was honest with her reviews.

“I thought some of them were pretty good but some of them weren’t the best.”

Along the way, Barth realized this was a product other mothers might be looking for as well, so in September she began to bottle the juice called Flavrz, which is now available in small grocery stores and health food shops throughout New England and New York.

  • This juice sounds pretty good. My only question though is why she decided to sweeten the juice with agave syrup at all? It seems like the fruit itself should be sweet enough…

I prefer First Juice. Like Flavrz, First Juice was created by a parent (a dad) looking for a healthy, low sugar juice for his kids. He designed First Juice to be the first juice a child should drink. It contains 50% less sugar then the leading 100% juice, and unlike Flavrz, it’s less sweet, which trains the taste buds to not expect and crave a sweet taste.
