How to Get a Tax Extension

Tax time seems to creep up on us faster and faster each year. Before we know it we have one week left to file, we can’t find half the information we know we need and we haven’t even figured out how or where were going to have our taxes done.
If you’re a sole proprietor or a single member LLC you automatically qualify for a 6 month extension when you file the IRS Form 4868, the “Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Income Tax Return”. This form needs to be filed by April 17th and can be downloaded here.

Hi Jaclyn-
Another tip to add to your article: taxpayers wishing to file the 4868 online, can do so through a service called Filelater. The beauty here is that the extension gets sent to the IRS automatically and the taxpayer receives a confirmation that the extension has been accepted.
