Get Ready For the Government Spending Spree
Ready, set…..go win that federal contract.
The government is expected to spend monstrous sums in coming months, based on the Senate and House stimulus plans: $16 billion for construction and renovation of schools, $9 billion to increase broadband, $40 billion for the development of cleaner and more efficient energy, and on and on and on.
The lowdown: Entrepreneurs should be prepared to go after a piece of the gigantic pie. And there will be all sorts of small businesses that might be able to take advantage – not just manufacturers and construction firms.
That means learning about government contracting, and getting whatever paperwork and certificates you need in order now, so that when the spigot opens, you are ready to bid on your share.
But for a small business, it does take some homework to make sure you have proper registration and know where to look for contract opportunities. It’s a good idea to start reading up as soon as possible.
You can find a helpful primer on small-business government contracting here, and a helpful FAQ here. This searchable government database lists federal agency government contracting opportunities valued at $25,000 or more.

That was an interesting post. i recently wrote an article on the government’s new plan for small business. it is actually a rather large pie that is going to be dealt out…over $720 million with additional money to be dealt out to homes in need of energy saving, road construction and more.

Just a caveat – if a company is interested in going after government contracts, it should make an effort to learn more than just where to register (ccr.gov) and how to find opportunities. There are a ton of rules and regulations that could cause a company serious heartburn if it’s not aware of them. Take a class on government contracting or hire a consultant that specializes in the industry to make sure you don’t get in trouble.
