While we all love the idea of working from home, it is not all fun and games like some people think. There are rules that need to be set for the home office, guidelines that need to be followed, certain balance, etc. For those of you who are struggling with your family life and home office life, below are a few suggestions on making thing’s run smoother.

  • Set your business hour’s and make them known. Having a set schedule let’s your family know when to expect you working and allow’s them to better obey your office space during work hour’s.
  • Hire help. This can be a nanny or even a day care facility even just for one or two day’s a week to give you a break.
  • Power it all down. On weekends and outside of weekly work hour’s, shut everything down, turn off the computer, office phone ringer, etc.
  • Involve your children. This can be even something as simple as stuffing envelopes or licking them closed.
  • Pay attention. If your children and spouse start hinting or complaining about you working too much, take this to heart and make necessary adjustments if the complaint is valid. It is easy to get wrapped up in “home work”.

How do you balance your home work life with your family?

  • One of our sacred family rules: office supplies are not house supplies. I don’t feel I can use the supplies that I use for the office for home use, as it cuts into the bottom line. This goes triple for my Stamps.com postage meter, which my kids have no trouble using because they know how to use my printer. They try to hide it, but I know that my daughter paid for her postage using my meter rather than going out to buy herself stamps. It may have saved her some time, but I definitely made her pay back my business.
