A lot of highly qualified and talented people have been laid off or fired with it being no fault of their own. While a lot of companies may find it to be a risky move right now to hire new people, now is actually the time to hire employees provided your company can afford it.

It’s absolutely a buyers market, You have a much larger pool of extremely talented people who are hungrier than ever.

First time job seekers fresh out of school are setting their sights lower then ever and long time workers who have been laid off are willing to compromise more then ever.

Job seekers today are willing to take the “on a need contract basis” job or the part-time only job. Some are even willing to work for a little while before establishing benefits and perks with their job.

These people are hungry for a job of any kind that they qualify for, so snatch them up now while you can before conditions improve and then you can’t afford to hire them.

Do you have any thoughts on hiring new employees during a recession?

  • Jaclyn, good point. Many small business owners are afraid to hire at this point, but people looking for work ARE being flexible, very flexible. One thing that certain small businesses in our area are doing are asking their current employees to recommend people to hire. They are allocating more time and energy interviewing these referrals than people who just apply for the job. It’s netting them some pretty great people that they would not otherwise be able to hire.
