Don’t Be Vanilla

There’s a great post up on the Small Business Marketing site, of which I’m a contributor, about personalizing your brand:

Vanilla is the most popular type of ice cream in the world. But consumers of vanilla ice cream don’t really care about which brand of vanilla ice cream they are eating.

More importantly, fans of special flavors like Cherry Garcia, by Ben and Jerry’s, would never consider switching to another brand, or back to vanilla. The point is simple – niche targeting and specialized content invoke preference, emotion and commitment to your brand.

  • That is very true. I hear that expression used in all sorts of life situations….”don’t be vanilla” or “your soooo vanilla”. While being vanilla is not always such a bad thing, but sometimes you need to stray outside of your norm and color outside of the lines in certain situation’s especially dealing with business today in order to get noticed and stand out from all of your competitors.

  • I counsel a great deal of people daily on how to get new positions that they are seeking. One of the key factors is the difference maker on what makes them the person, what makes them different cause most are walking around vanilla. Really like the article and how true it is for almost all our scenarios no matter what we do.
