AARP Tests Small-Biz Program

Tampa Bay Business Journals:

AARP Services Inc. launched an initiative designed to assist small-business owners with group health insurance, retirement planning and payroll services.

The program is being test-marketed in Chicago and Tampa, a release said.

The Small Business Services benefits package includes health and disability insurance options through UnitedHealthcare, part of Unitedhealth Group Inc.; 401(k) retirement plans from AARP Financial Inc. and payroll solutions from Intuit.

AARP Services also established a Web site to help small-business owners make informed decisions about what products are right for them and their employees.

AARP Services, a subsidiary of AARP, said a workplace study it conducted in 2007 showed more than half of all business owners are over age 50. Nearly half of the smaller companies, with 10 or less employees, said “no one is trying to sell” them employee benefits.

AARP Services said the limited launch of the initiative would help it further evaluate how well the program resonates with this important market segment. Other markets may be added later in the year, the release said.
