Ahwatukee Mom Makes Kid Safety Her Business

azcentral.com:

The birth of one baby and the death of another have inspired Ahwatukee Foothills resident Maggie Brown to start up a business she hopes will help save the lives of children ages 5 and younger.

Brown, a new grandmother and former PetSmart Inc. district manager, recently created the Web-based Alive Past 5 LLC to caution parents about dangers to kids and to promote child safety products.

“It’s a passionate cause of mine,” said Brown, whose granddaughter Kyla was born eight
months ago.

Four months before that, Brown’s nephew’s newborn died of sudden infant death syndrome. Although it is unknown whether a crib monitor could have saved the baby, the tragedy gave Brown a mission.

“The light bulb went off,” she said. “I realized I could use the Web and tell new parents ‘This could happen to you.’ ”

So www.alivepast5.com has a section titled “Horrific headlines” that Brown updates daily with Internet links.

People who are not parents of young children could be turned off by the long list of stories about children drowning in backyard pools, dying after being struck by cars in their own driveways and or being crushed by everyday objects like television sets.

But new parents find it fascinating, she said.

“I had 100 new visitors to the site yesterday and I am getting a lot of good feedback,” she said.
