The Right Way To Close Your Doors

Bye forever

Have you ever had the not so pleasureable experience of finding out that your company is closing it’s doors by watching it on the news at home? That is exactly how some of the GM and Chrysler employees at the Kenosha plant found out that they would soon be out of jobs. Harvard Business recently wrote an article on the wrong way of closing your doors, I think this definitely is one of the wrong ways.

Yes these are tough times in our economy, and no not everyone know’s the exact right thing to do or say to their hard work employees, but there are better ways to let them know your closing other then letting them find out on tv. Always be honest with your employees through everything, if your company is slowing down and having a hard time, let your people know this at the weekly or monthly staff meeting.

I have had to preside over cutbacks at a number of companies — including Quest Diagnostics and Masonite International — and have found time and again that going the extra yard to help employees, customers, suppliers, and dealers through the transition is not only the right thing to do, it’s good business.

What do you think about the way GM and Chrysler in Kenosha handled their closing?
