2 Chains Adding Links In Tucson

In separate deals, Golden Corral and QuikTrip have closed on sites for new locations in Tucson, pushing ahead with expansion plans despite the downturn.

Golden Corral, a popular buffet chain based in Raleigh, N.C., will be opening a fourth location in Tucson this fall, having purchased a site at 6855 N. Thornydale Road on the northwest side for $1.5 million.

Meanwhile, Tulsa, Okla.-based QuikTrip, a popular convenience-store chain, has purchased the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 549, 1884 S. Craycroft Road, for $1.5 million. The post plans to move to a new site.

The new Golden Corral should open in late September or October and will initially hire about 120 people, although that number will drop to about 80 once the restaurant settles in, said Lamar Bell, a senior vice president of finance for Golden Corral.

“We think we are going to be a good job creator for the market,” Bell said.

There are three Golden Corral franchises in the Tucson area, and plans had been in the works for some time to create a fourth at the Thornydale location. But the franchisee, who was building the restaurant while leasing the lot, was not able to finish the project.
