Mompreneur Up For Award

Campbell River Mirror:

Leslie Hanes thanks her kids for her nomination as Mom Entrepreneur of the Year.

After all, if it wasn’t for her two daughters asking “we need this” or “we need that” for their equestrian events, Hanes may have never started her fast-growing business, Discovery Trekking Outfitters.

“They kept asking me to make things they just couldn’t find,” she says, at her store and manufacturing centre on Ironwood Road, beside Curves, which she also owns. “I just started creating things they couldn’t find anywhere else.”

Hanes, 54, spent 18 years working as an adjuster for ICBC and sewed in a her spare time. But six years ago she began making custom outerwear gear from high-tech fabrics and it’s grown into a multi-faceted company.

She’s now in the running for the Mom Entrepreneur of the Year award, sponsored by savvymom.ca and you can vote for her online at www.momentrepreneuraward.ca by typing “Discovery Trekking” into the search window.
