Biz Tech Tip: Gmail

By on August 10, 2009 in Ideas

The New York Times:

Is your Gmail inbox sprinkled with old electronic newsletters and mailing-list messages from companies you don’t really care about anymore?

Google recently introduced a new Gmail feature that lets you automatically unsubscribe from unwanted mailings with one click. It doesn’t work with every sender yet, but Google is slowly adding more support from more companies.

To use it, log into your Gmail account through your Web browser, select a newsletter or mailing list message. Click the Report Spam link.

For companies that support the feature, a box should pop up asking if you want to unsubscribe from the newsletter. If you choose to unsubscribe, Google sends a request to the sender, asking to take you off the mailing list.

This is HORRIBLE advice! If you have subscribed to an email newsletter and no longer wish to receive it, click on the unsubscribe link in the newsletter.

Reporting it as spam will harm legitimate organizations that send opt-in emails.

Only choose “Report Spam” if you are absolutely certain that you did not ask to receive it. (And not just because you don’t remember subscribing or changed your mind.)

I agree with Cathy, whilst a very handy tool for us consumers who are bombarded with rising levels of SPAM daily. This will harm the reputable companies who send opt-in emails.
