Consider drop shipping: What if you just want to get your feet wet and don’t want to spend a lot of money discovering whether this online universe is for you? Then check out drop shipping. Drop shipping is an arrangement between you and a wholesaler whereby you offer their products on your site but you don’t actually physically stock any inventory. If someone clicks and buys, notice is sent to you and the wholesaler, the wholesalers ships the product using your labels and logos, and you split the profit.

Are you one of the thousands of people contemplating starting your own business? Maybe you’re thinking about starting up an online business, something like a store that sells goods, but your not quite sure if it will actually be the right fit for you. Well, below are some tips I recently found on USA Today about starting a new online store that won’t get you in too deep in case it’s not for you.

  • Take a look around at several of the different online stores now such as Amazon, Ebay, and Overstock.com, and take a look at some of the services they offer that helps them to make profits. Whether it is offering coupons, free shipping over a certain amount, or free products and incorporate those into your own store.
  • Pick your products and pick them wisely. Don’t just offer every product known to man hoping to appeal to everyone. Figure out who you mainly plan to target and what they need or want, then provide those products. As your business grows and you find it is a business you can be in, you can always add more inventory to your list.
  • Make sure you set up the necessary systems to be able to handle sales. If you will be selling products online then you need a credit card company, paypal account, merchant accounts and the ability to predict shipping and handling costs. You will also need to have someone who can handle any customer inquiries as well as returns and exchanges.
