DIY Summer Camps

While summer is over and the kids are back in school, it is never too early to start building up some ideas for how to survive next summer. The right idea might also help you combine time with your family, and a little side business for yourself.

Over the summer one mom decided that her kids weren’t just going to spend the summer sitting at home complaining about boredom. Rather, she decided they were going to spend each day learning something new. That is when she came up with a do-it-yourself summer camp experience that could be enjoyed right in their own home (with a few ‘field trips’, of course).

While her idea didn’t expand past her own children, a mom with the right resources might be able to expand this idea into something that could incorporate a few neighborhood kids and create a little extra income in the process!

During cooking week, for example, Diekmann and her children spend the first day at the library, picking out recipes and researching how to run a restaurant.

Then they head to Wegmans for groceries and The Basin Pub for a firsthand look at professional food preparation.

Next comes making the menu and deciding who will be the restaurant’s head chef, host and server.

By the end of the week, they’re cooking up a meal of ratatouille, pasta with meatballs, and chocolate fondue for their dad and grandparents.

In what ways could you expand on Laura’s original at-home camp experience?
