Is The Term ‘Small Business’ Demeaning?

The New York Times:

Do you consider yourself a small-business owner? Or does that phrase make you cringe?

Often, the terms entrepreneur and small-business owner are used interchangeably — but that’s not quite right either.

Clearly, not all entrepreneurs are small-business owners and not all small-business owners are entrepreneurs. Still, there has to be some way to distinguish big businesses from, uh … not big businesses.

Is there a better term? Anyone got a suggestion?

  • Rich,
Not sure if you’re familiar with the small business advisor, Warrillow (now Corporate Executive Board), but a study they conducted in 2008 clearly showed that small businesses prefer the title “owner” or “business owner” by 20% over “small business owner”. The question used in the survey was – Please rate your preference regarding the following titles/positions companies can use when marketing to you.” Hope that helps.
p.s. Entrepreneur came in lower than small business owner.
