From Teaching To Tutoring
Ladera parent Lisa Ross saw a business opportunity in the budget cuts to local schools.
Just a few weeks ago, she opened Apple Tree Tutoring on Bannister Street for remedial and enrichment tutoring for Ladera Ranch elementary school students.
Ross, who has worked in interior design and sales, said two factors influenced her decision to start the business: location and timing.
With just one other tutoring center in Ladera Ranch, Ross said she could fill a need in the community.
“The majority of us were driving out of Ladera to find a tutor,” said Ross, the parent of a second-grader and a fourth-grader.
She also said parent concerns about larger class sizes made the tutoring center a smart idea.
“I thought, ‘What a perfect fit to have some (laid off) teachers work as tutors here,’” she said.
