Home Business Is Sweet Proposition
The smiles are the best.
When Renee Martinez delivers a basket filled with homemade goodies or a custom-designed cake and sees the smile on the face of the person receiving it, it makes her day.
“I did a superheroes cake for a 5-year-old’s birthday party that incorporated Superman, Batman, the Power Rangers and Spider-Man. It was really neat to see the look on his face when I took him the cake. People just seem to get a big kick out of that,” said Martinez, owner of Down East Treats in Rocky Mount.
The former stay-at-home mom always loved baking, so when she first dreamed up the idea for running a made-to-order bakery and gift basket business out of her home, she was excited to get started.
Two years later, Down East Treats has had its ups and downs, but the business still is a dream fit for Martinez because it leaves her plenty of time to spend with her three sons.

That is such a sweet story! What kid and even adult doesn’t love a specially made for them cake or some sort of sweet such as a basket of cookies!
